Italy has officially recalled its ambassador to Egypt over the murder of an Italian student, Guilo Regeni, in Cairo.
The decision was conveyed via the official twitter handle of the Italian foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni who tweeted (in Italian) that Italy wanted “one thing only: The truth about Giulio.”
Ho richiamato a Roma per consultazioni il nostro ambasciatore in Egitto. Vogliamo una sola cosa: la verità su Giulio #Regeni
— Paolo Gentiloni (@PaoloGentiloni) April 8, 2016
“I called back to Rome for consultations our Ambassador in Egypt. We want only one thing: the truth about Giulio Regeni,” his full tweet read.
The Italian decision is the latest development on the issue after Egyptian investigators went to Italy to share findings of their investigations with their counterparts.
Human Rights groups have posited that Egyptian security forces were to blame for the death of Regeni, but the Egyptian government insists that says a criminal gang was behind his murder.
Mr Regeni, a 28-year old student disappeared on his way to meet a friend on 25 January. His body was found on February 3, mutilated and with signs of torture, his issue has received a lot of political attention in Italy going as far as the Italian lawmaking chamber.
